F-2 Visa for Spouses and Children of F-1 Students

An F-1 student’s spouse and unmarried children under 21 may be eligible to accompany or follow the student in F-2 status. The right documents and a realistic plan for work, school and reentry are essential.

What to understand before filing or traveling

Find the eligibility rules, practical documents and consequences most relevant to this classification.

Who qualifies and what documents establish eligibility?

F-2 is for a qualifying spouse or unmarried child under 21 of an F-1 student who is maintaining status. Each dependent needs an individual dependent Form I-20 issued by the school; marriage or birth records establish the family relationship.

For visa processing abroad, the dependent normally applies for an F-2 visa where required, while a person already in the US may explore Form I-539 when eligible. The principal student's school records, financial support and I-94 history can be important.

An F-2 visa interview packet ordinarily starts with the dependent's passport, separate F-2 I-20, marriage or birth certificate, and evidence of the F-1 student's active SEVIS record and financial ability to support the family. Consular instructions and any prior immigration history may require additional documents.

A dependent applying from inside the US should distinguish a Form I-539 change of status from consular visa issuance. USCIS approval governs the authorized classification in the US; a later trip abroad may still require a visa application and admission inspection.

Employment and unpaid activities

F-2 status does not permit US employment, including work accepted from a US employer merely because it is remote. An F-2 spouse seeking employment should first evaluate whether an independently work-authorized status is available.

Volunteer activities are not automatically exempt from immigration employment rules simply because no wages are paid. Review the actual duties and who benefits before beginning an arrangement that resembles a regular job.

An unpaid internship, professional practicum or volunteer arrangement requires individual analysis. The absence of salary is not a substitute for examining the duties, the host organization's normal staffing and whether the activity constitutes employment under the immigration rules.

School: spouse versus child

F-2 children may attend elementary and secondary school full time. Adult F-2 dependents can pursue certain part-time postsecondary study, but full-time postsecondary study ordinarily requires a change to F-1, M-1 or another classification that authorizes it.

An F-2 student cannot assume that filing an I-539 immediately permits a full-time program. Confirm whether an approval and related SEVIS steps are required before classes begin.

The key distinction is not whether a class is labeled online or in person, but whether the dependent's proposed course load and program are permissible for F-2 status. Ask the designated school official to review the program before committing to tuition or enrolling full time.

A dependent nearing age 21 also needs a separate status plan. F-2 eligibility as a child does not continue indefinitely merely because the parent remains an F-1 student.

Extensions, travel and the principal student

F-2 status depends on the F-1 principal maintaining status, including any applicable authorized practical training period. Changes in the principal's program, OPT employment, or status can affect the entire family.

Before departure, review each dependent's visa, I-20 travel endorsement, passport and current I-94. An extension or change of status approval is not the same as a visa for reentry.

For a family traveling during OPT or STEM OPT, review the F-1 principal's current I-20, applicable employment authorization, evidence of qualifying employment and the dependent I-20s before departure. A valid visa stamp alone does not prove continuing eligibility for admission.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions about F-2 dependent visa

Concise answers to common issues. Individual facts and immigration records can change the result.

Can an F-2 spouse work remotely for a foreign employer?

Working physically in the US can raise employment authorization issues even when the employer or customers are abroad. Review the actual activity before starting it; F-2 does not itself authorize employment.

May an F-2 child attend a US public school?

Yes. An eligible F-2 child may attend elementary or secondary school full time, subject to applicable school enrollment requirements.

Can an F-2 spouse begin a full-time university program after filing I-539?

Filing alone does not necessarily authorize full-time postsecondary study. The prospective student should confirm the permitted enrollment rules and obtain the appropriate status before beginning a program that requires it.

What happens to F-2 status if the F-1 student stops maintaining status?

A dependent’s F-2 status relies on the principal’s valid F-1 status. The circumstances and any transition to another classification should be assessed promptly.

What should an F-2 spouse bring to the consular interview?

Typically a passport, dependent I-20, marriage certificate, evidence of the F-1 principal's status or school program and support documents. Follow the particular consulate's instructions and be ready to explain the intended stay.

Can an F-2 spouse take an online degree full time from inside the US?

Whether a program is online does not by itself resolve F-2 study limits. Full-time postsecondary study generally requires a classification permitting that course load; review the exact program before enrollment.

What happens when an F-2 child turns 21?

F-2 child classification generally requires the child to remain unmarried and under 21. A timely transition to an independently eligible status may be important, especially when school attendance will continue.

Will an F-2 change of status approval give me a visa for travel?

No. Form I-539 approval inside the US and the visa needed for a later application for admission are separate matters. Review visa requirements and the current I-94 before travel.
