R1 Visa for Church Internship Program

I am trying to find a visa for a woman who lives in Bulgaria who desires to come to the US to be part of an internship program at a Church. Can you tell me what type of visa that would be?  I don't think she qualifies for an R1 since she is not an employee of a church in Bulgaria.

Actually, employment with the Church abroad is a not a requirement for an R1 visa. Instead, she must show that she has been a member of the denomination for two years. Unfortunately, the R1 visa cannot be used for internship purposes. in this case, a J1 visa would be more appropriate. J1 visas are commonly used for internship programs and we will be able to help you in this matter.
